Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob developed heart complications following a fall last week, with his heart stopping for at least two seconds, his lawyer Amer Hamzah Arshad said.
Speaking to reporters after visiting Ismail Sabri at the National Heart Institute (IJN), the legal counsel said his client is scheduled to undergo a pacemaker procedure this afternoon.
According to Amer (above), the Bera MP started feeling "a bit giddy" (lightheaded) when giving his statement to the MACC at its headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday.
"I do not have the exact details, but of course the MACC had arranged for him to be transported to IJN because of his condition.
"Two weeks before this, he had a fall and had a medical need. He had to be admitted to IJN, and then there was about like two seconds when his heart stopped beating.
"He was supposed to go for a check-up with IJN next Monday. But because of the things that happened yesterday, maybe he exhibited or caused him to have this kind of situation," the lawyer said.
The former premier was scheduled to be charged under the MACC Act at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court this morning.
However, the former Umno vice-president had to be sent to the hospital last night after spending almost the whole day being questioned by the MACC.
Clearing name
According to Amer, IJN confirmed that doctors detected arrhythmia, an abnormal heart rhythm, in the veteran politician.
A letter from the hospital was presented to the court this morning, before judge Suzana Hussin decided to postpone the case to Aug 27.
Asked about the criminal charge against Ismail Sabri, the lawyer said his client is ready to clear his name.
"Basically, he definitely wants to clear his name, of course, but at the same time, the main thing on his mind is his health.
"So, let's hope and pray for his speedy recovery. We've confirmed with the medical staff that the (pacemaker) procedure will start after the Friday prayer," Amer added. - Mkini
