Selangor sets target of RM14,500 monthly household income

 The state government said it also intends to build 200,000 affordable homes to help more Selangor residents own a home, and formalisation of the care economy.

Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, tabling the 2nd Selangor Plan at the state assembly, also outlined plans for better public transport.

The Selangor government intends to raise the median household income of Selangor residents to RM14,500 a month and reduce the unemployment rate to 2.2%, menteri besar Amirudin Shari told the state assembly today when tabling the 2nd Selangor five-year development plan.

He said the latest government statistics showed that median monthly household income had already reached RM10,726, exceeding the target of RM9,290 in the first five-year plan.

Amirudin said the state government would develop the Selangor Dignified Living Index by which to assess the effectiveness of household assistance and support programmes, with evaluations conducted every 12 and 24 months.

Among the initiatives planned to achieve the new income target is the formalisation of the care economy, involving informal workers who currently provide childcare and elderly care services without adequate guidance and support. “This includes increasing opportunities for women in the economy, particularly mothers returning to the workforce after childbirth,” he said.

The state government also intends to build 200,000 affordable homes to help more Selangor residents own a home. “To date, 64,188 homes have been completed, while 69,014 more are under construction, bringing the total to 133,202 units,” he said.

He said there would be 3,000 homes available for rent by 2030 for those who are not yet eligible for housing loans, with 30% of the monthly rent set aside by the Selangor housing and property board and returned to the tenants as a deposit for buying a home.

Among other measures included in the 2nd Selangor Plan are:

• expansion of the tuition programme to benefit 200,000 pupils by 2030;
• aid for 150,000 small and medium-sized enterprises to receive mentoring, training, digital skills, financial management capabilities and business expansion strategies;
• better public transport services, with Selangor Mobility’s demand responsive transit service realigned to improve connectivity to commercial areas and greater frequency of public transport services to LRT and MRT stations;
• covered walkways would be built at every transit station as part of moves towards creating walkable cities;
• bus stops to be provided at every Rumah Selangorku Harapan and Rumah Selangorku Idaman development. Amirudin called for the use of technology to identify areas with the highest traffic volume and public gathering points, and assess the need for small bus stops in every housing estate. - FMT
