A DAP leader today reminded Umno Youth exco member Wan Zuhir Wan Ghazali not to undermine the contributions of non-Muslims to Islam.
This followed Wan Zuhir’s defence of a recent “tahlil” gathering - a prayer ceremony for the dead - that allegedly mocked DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke’s defeat in Chennah during the recent Negeri Sembilan polls.
DAP central exco member Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, citing sayings of Prophet Muhammad, said Islamic history showed that non-Muslims could also contribute to strengthening Islam and benefiting Muslims.
He cited Abdullah Urayqit and Mut’im Adi, who helped the Prophet as a guide and protector, while they were still non-believers.
“It does not mean Allah is pleased with their transgression, but it rather demonstrates His power to use anyone to accomplish His will in honouring and upholding the religion,” he said in a Facebook post today.
The senator then compared Wan Zuhir with Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Steven Sim, whose initiatives he said had benefited many Muslims.
He cited the “Lindung 24 Jam” scheme introduced during Sim’s tenure as human resources minister, which extended workers’ protection beyond working hours.
“I am saddened that Umno Youth, a movement synonymous with championing Islam and the Malays, chose to use a ‘tahlil’ event to belittle Loke, when an initiative introduced by Sim has benefited Malays and Muslims,” Sheikh Umar said.
‘Doing tahlil for Loke’s burial’
Yesterday, Sheikh Umar condemned Wan Zuhir over the “tahlil” ceremony, which allegedly mocked Loke’s defeat to BN’s John Siow Kong Choon in Chennah in the Aug 1 Negeri Sembilan state election.
Wan Zuhir had shared a video on social media showing a group of men, including himself, sitting on the floor and reciting Islamic prayers in what he described as a “tahlil”.
His Threads caption read: “Doing ‘tahlil’ for Loke’s burial in Chennah. Condolences.”
Sheikh Umar called the act “irresponsible”, saying such content could tarnish Islam’s image as a religion that advocates respect and dignity.
Wan Zuhir subsequently denied disrespecting Islam through his social media post. - Mkini
