Malacca polls: Don't let BN-PN pact fall over one or two seats, says Tuan Ibrahim

 

As BN anticipates a dominant “blue wave” in Malacca, its new political ally Perikatan Nasional remains hopeful that the two coalitions can reach a deal on seat allocations.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, PN deputy chairperson Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said no discussions had been held so far, despite BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announcing today that his coalition would recontest all 21 seats it won in the last election, leaving seven seats for negotiation.

“Discussions have yet to be held, and I am confident the matter will be resolved amicably,” Tuan Ibrahim said.

The Kubang Kerian MP said BN-PN cooperation should be preserved and not allowed to falter over seat allocation disputes.

He was referring to the political pact forged during the recent Negeri Sembilan state election, where BN won 18 seats and PN seven, giving the two coalitions a two-thirds majority in the 36-seat state assembly.

“What is important is that the BN-PN cooperation must continue. We should not allow this unity to fall apart over one or two seats.

“We should look at the bigger picture and the greater challenges ahead. I am confident that all issues can be resolved through negotiations and compromise,” he said.

PN hopes for reasonable seat deal

Malacca opposition chief Dr Yadzil Yaakub of Parti Wawasan Negara likewise expressed hope that BN would give up some seats to PN in the state election, which is expected to be called soon.

He said Zahid’s announcement merely reflected BN’s “intention”, rather than the outcome of discussions with PN, which he said were still ongoing.

The Bemban assemblyperson said the Malacca Wawasan chapter would leave the decision on how many seats to contest to the party’s top leadership, but added that the number “should be reasonable”.

Meanwhile, PAS central leadership member Annuar Musa, in a Facebook statement, acknowledged Zahid’s announcement and urged party members to leave the matter to PAS’ top leadership.

He said PAS would conduct a study to gauge public sentiment, while reminding party members not to lose sight of the successes achieved so far.
