NFC: Copper poisoning in cattle not unusual

Cattle dying from copper toxicity is not unusual in the industry, and opposition party MPs should not be “scare mongers”, the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) says.
The NFC said this in response to PJ Utara MP Tony Pua’s demand that the government certifies that NFC's beef is safe for consumption.
Pua cited a Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) test that showed six NFC cows had died last year from copper poisoning.

NONE"The fact that Pua (right) had sighted test reports issued by the DVS proves that a very high standard prevails in the way NFC conducts its operations,” the company’s veterinarian Dr Md Dali  Baba said in a statement today.

Dali said that copper toxicity in cattle occurs occasionally in the livestock business and that acute or chronic copper toxicity is encountered in most parts of the world.

Throughout 2011, he said, only eight cattle from its stock suffered from copper toxicity.

Therefore, Dali added, Pua should not be an “irresponsible scare monger and alarm the people with unwarranted negative mention of ‘diseased’ cattle at NFC”.
The Petaling Jaya Utara MP had raised concern yesterday on the death of six cows owned by the NFC, and questioned whether the meat would be safe for consumption.
'Our meat is safe for human consumption'
Dali gave his assurance that the company’s stock was “thoroughly inspected” and “is safe for human consumption”.

He added: “NFC maintains a high level of health audit on its cattle. Dead cattle on the farm are thoroughly inspected with laboratory tests done to determine the causes, and after a post-mortem the carcasses are appropriately disposed of,” he said.
Dali also asserted the Veterinary Health Mark (VHM) is an assurance that meat from NFC is prepared under the most hygienic conditions and in accordance with world standards.

He said apart from cattle, other animals such as chicken, ducks, goats, ostriches and rabbits also die prematurely in the farms.

“All meat at NFC are sourced from animals slaughtered and thoroughly inspected, and therefore certified halal and safe for human consumption.
“On the other hand, dead animals are investigated and disposed of appropriately.

“NFC reassures the public that the company has a fully qualified veterinarian and two meat inspectors in its employment at its abattoir, one of whom has more than 35 years of experience in his field to ensure quality hygenically-prepared beef is delivered,” Dali added.
