Even as the police probe a complaint against 15 Facebookers for allegedly posting an image of the premier with a shoe-print on his face, the Internet community is reacting against the Penang MCA leader who lodged the report.
State MCA Bukit Bendera chief Tan Khai Beng, who lodged the report at the Pattani Road police station on Monday, has come under intense criticism on the social network site for jeorpardising the security of his Facebook friends.
Photos of him lodging the police report have been circulated, with netizens warning others to block him from their site as well as to remove profile photos of the shoe-print in order to avoid trouble.
Khai Beng could not be reached for comment.
Georgetown OCPD Gan Kong Meng, when contacted, said the police are investigating the case under Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
This states: ‘Any person who knowingly initiates the transmission of any comment, request, suggestion or other communication which is obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person is liable to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year.’
MCA Wanita head Tan Cheng Liang (right) was asked if the BN and MCA leadership support Khai Beng’s complaint, which is being seen as spying on Facebookers who had accepted him into their ‘Friends’ list.
Cheng Liang responded by quoting Confucius’ Golden Rule, ‘Do not do unto others what you would not have them do unto you’.
She said the act of posting the image may be "humorous" to some, but may be offensive to others.
"There is law and order in everything. There is respect and dignity, and moral boundaries,” she said.
“There is no such thing (in the world) as total freedom (to behave) according to (one’s) whims and fancies.”
Last week, police recorded statements from two teenagers for allegedly showing disrespect to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
One of them, a student who allegedly bared his buttocks to a photograph of Najib during the Janji Demokrasi rally on Aug 30 in Kuala Lumpur, has since been expelled from his college.
The other teenager, who allegedly stepped on photos of Najib and his wife during the rally, has been questioned by police in relation to an offence under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948.
Police are looking for 11 others for alleged involvement in several incidents, including displaying the Sang Saka Malaya flag at the event.
