Police not doing Najib any favours

YOURSAY 'There is no need to handcuff Ong at all, she was not resisting arrest. The police are, as usual, a disgrace.'

Police chief: Handcuffed girl got it 'very mild'

your sayFerdtan: Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohmad Salleh has defended his men for handcuffing a 19-year-old girl who surrendered herself. He added that it is the arrest procedure.

Is he blind or speaking nonsense? Why didn't Dr Ling Liong Sik and Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and many more BN leaders handcuffed when brought to the police station?

Is it BN's law to have different treatment for different class of people? Who, by right, should be treated leniently? Should it be grown-ups who should have known better than to commit offences or a teenager?

Please don't justify the unjustifiable. The more the police officers open their mouths, the more it shows their partiality.

Odin: Mohmad Salleh, I have never had a high impression of the intellect of police officers - and I mean officers, not those from the ranks and files who, generally speaking, cannot be expected to be very bright - and you have served as a clear proof of my opinion.

I will now enlighten you. The fact that the girl has been handcuffed is material to the matter. Whether her arms were positioned in front or behind her is immaterial.

Doubtless you have your SOP (standard operation procedure), but you have followed the procedures stipulated only when parties dissenting against this corrupt regime and violent criminals are concerned.

This girl has turned herself in. In effect, then, she has not been arrested. She is young and small built. She has not committed a violent crime. She certainly not would have run away, unless your men molested her as at least one of them was reported a while ago to have done to an Indonesian woman in the lock-up.

You are nothing but a pathetic sycophant to this filthy regime.

Baiyuensheng: I think Ong Sing Yee's fundamental liberty right has been impeached on. Normally, handcuffs are used as a precaution against escape during a transfer, or when they are necessary for the protection of the arresting officer or other individuals.

Does the 19-year-old look like a threat to the police that she has to be handcuffed?

Anonymous_3f26: Is there not such a thing as ‘budi bicara' (discretion) in this case? The KL police chief should have used his brain and not use the law without regard to the consequences.

Now you have made a lot of people angry with the government, which to them is becoming more oppressive and politically biased. The people will show, come GE13, that they have had enough of this Umno-BN government.

Wong Lu Shin: There is no need to handcuff her at all, she was not resisting arrest. The police are, as usual, a disgrace - arresting a teenager for "sedition" when the real traitors are in Putrajaya.

Whatsup: Mohmad Salleh, you, and the rest of the PDRM, are nothing but a big bully that knows nothing about democratic laws and real police's responsibilities except to be shamefully doing all the dirty jobs for Umno.

You've shamed the whole PDRM. There were so many seditious acts against opposition leaders, and you did nothing. So many thugs were dangerously disrupting opposition's ceramahs, and you did nothing.

But for this, you want to follow proper procedures.

Cannon: In their zeal to please their political masters and blinded by corrupt self-interest in siding with BN, the cops displayed blatant double standards and selective prosecution.

They have purposefully overlooked the transgressions by Umno's goons while they were quick in clamping down on these students.

The police, in arresting and handcuffing the female student who had already surrendered herself to the authorities, have triggered widespread revulsion and disgust, causing public offence on the same seismic scale as Hishammuddin Hussein's keris-waving.

The cops acting stupidly have alienated non-Malay votes for Umno-BN in the coming general election. This one single act of PDRM may well turn out to be the tipping point for GE13.

Vijay47: I don't know what the young woman and her supporters are complaining about. Like the KL police chief said, she got it pretty mild. Otherwise, she could have committed suicide with a bathroom towel. Some people are never grateful.

Not Convinced: So Vijay 47, the handcuffs are to ‘protect' her. Didn't I hear that before from somewhere?

Good Men: If they did not handcuff her, it was extremely likely that she would have tried to escape (even though she had surrendered herself).

Furthermore, although, she was small and petite, probably weighing less than 50kg, she might even have used martial art to cause grievous bodily harm on all the arresting officers. The handcuffs are therefore absolutely justified.

Tholu: Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (which becomes part of UK law under the Human Rights Act 1998) states, inter alia, that "the lawful arrest or detention of a person effected for the purpose of bringing him before the competent legal authority on reasonable suspicion of having committed an offence or when it is reasonably considered necessary to prevent his committing an offence or fleeing after having done so..."

Did the police think she would flee after she voluntarily surrendered? Technically, she was not arrested - she was ‘detained' (or can I say temporarily retained by the police) for questioning and/or for her statement to be recorded.

Whatever the law and the police SOP, does she deserve the handcuff? Have the police turned into ‘robots' who are devoid of a sense of discretion and consideration based on the circumstances?

Telestai!: Mohmad, no need to pretend to be magnanimous. The girl is entitled to express her opinion although it was done in a disrespectful way.

PM Najib Razak is not the ruler so such an act cannot be construed as seditious. He is a public servant and if the public is not happy with his performance, they can show him the middle finger and there is nothing Najib can do.

Wira: Indeed, the suspect came to the police station on her own volition. Such a sweet demure girl. She is not a hardcore criminal nor a violent person who would resist arrest.

Yes, you can handcuff her but is that necessary? Did I see Khir Toyo in handcuffs when he was arrested?

It means discretion is allowed and the most apparent reason for this unnecessary act is to intimidate anyone who dares to disrespect Umno leaders (this cannot cover all BN leaders because Gerakan leader Koh Tsu Koon was also shown disrespect, but the Umno perpetrator was never arrested).

Jacob: It seems like the police force is losing the public relations battle and no amount of explanation can help their cause. The Malaysian public is disgusted by their double standards and incompetence.

NewMalaysia: If there is Bersih 4.0, I will surely bring along some Najib photos, not need salt and water.
The police wouldn't dare to shoot tear gas or water cannon at me, or else they would be disrespecting Najib as well. - Malaysiakini
