Hadi on TV should be 'live' or nothing, says PAS

PAS today stressed that its request for a live slot for president Abdul Hadi Awang on national television to explain the 'Amanat Hadi' polemic, is an all or nothing gambit.

"We asked for (a) live (telecast). If we don't get it we may not (participate)," secretary-general Mustafa Ali said when met by reporters today.

"If it is not live, as we all know, it can be edited ... the voice may be muted and what not."

He said that they needed the avenue to explain themselves after scathing attacks on the party resurfaced with regards to Hadi's 1981 speech.
Umno had criticised Hadi and PAS for the remarks which they said branded their members as infidels.

In his speech, Hadi had not mentioned Umno by name but said that Muslims who uphold infidel-created institutions and practiced secularism can be seen to be infidels.

Asked why they did not use their own Internet television service PAS TV to explain, Mustafa said that they do not have the same reach as government stations.

As BN politicians and government ministers are commenting on the matter, Mustafa believed that it is only right that PAS be allowed the right of reply.

Hadi had requested for live airtime on government television station from Information, Communications and Culture Minister Rais Yatim after the matter resurfaced when government-linked clerics asked him to retract the ‘amanat’.

While agreeing to feature Hadi’s explanation, Rais had said that it can only be pre-recorded and not be telecast live.
