PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli has questioned why prime minister Najib Razak settled for a plastic and toothbrush manufacturer to construct the National Defence Research Centre (Puspahanas).
In a statement today, Rafizi said Awan Megah, owned by Selangor Wanita UMNO chief Raja Roopiah Abdullah and appointed in 2005 by Najib, then the Defence minister, had no experience in the construction sector and went into a joint venture with GuppyUnip Sdn Bhd, a plastic and toothbrush manufacturing company.
They were involved in the RM100 million Puspahanas project in return for 223 acres of lands in Bukit Raja, which had been at the centre of controversy following businessman Deepak Jaikishan’s recent revelations to the media.
“According to Company Commission Malaysia (CCM), Awan Megah is a dormant company. The last financial transaction recorded by CCM is for the financial year ending December 31, 1993 proving it had no activities. To date, there is still no activity performed by Awan Megah based on CCM’s latest record on May 23, 2012,” said Rafizi.
Rafizi accused Najib of abusing his power as Defence minister, saying he had betrayed the armed forces in awarding the multi-million project to Awan Megah.
“Awan Megah is just an Ali Baba company appointed by Najib and given the 223 acres of lands,” he added.
Rafizi, who head the recently set-up National Oversight and Whistleblowers Centre, cited documents of a bank loan facility that GuppyUnip, a company set up on December 9, 2009. This showed that GyppyUnip was the sole financial source for Puspahanas and the development of the land.
“Awan Megah is just making profits out of the wind,” he added.
Awan Megah was recently entangled in a legal dispute with Deepak’s company Astacanggih over the same plot of lands. A legal suit by Deepak was dropped abruptly last week with Deepak claiming of an ‘ultimatum’ forced upon him following his media outburst targeting Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor.
Coincidently, Boustead Holdings, a company under the Defence ministry, had announced that it would take over Astacanggih and the land for RM160 million.
“This is clearly corruption by Najib which must be investigated immediately,” he said.
