Reshuffle in Seberang Perai district offices soon
A reshuffle of the three district officers in mainland Penang is currently underway, as news of a district officer being nabbed for bribery emerges.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng told Malaysiakini that the state government has taken steps to replace the district officer concerned.
“One of the new district officer will be a woman. She will be the second woman district officer in the country.” said Lim, while noting that the first was also appointed by his administration.
Lim said that the state government will not compromise with errant civil servants and will take stern action against those found guilty of graft.
He was responding to news reports that a district officer, an aide to one of Penang's two deputy chief ministers and another individual were arrested on Jan 3 for bribery.
They are expected to be charged in a day or two, where their identities will be officially made known. Lim said he was unsure who was the political aide mentioned in the reports.
According to several news reports, the trio was arrested during a MACC sting on the night of Jan 3 at a restaurant in Seberang Perai while one of them was attempting to bribe a woman with RM30,000.
The woman was reported to have accused a top civil servant of sexually harassing her and had filed an official complaint. The alleged inducement was meant to silence her.
Following this, the trio were arrested for 24 hours to have their statements recorded.
