Rosmah wants Roti 1Malaysia for Permata

The prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor has proposed that the Roti 1Malaysia Charity Programme be extended to Permata, a government-backed programme for early childhood education.

"I would like to appeal and suggest for the consideration of the Roti 1Malaysia programme - maybe you can think very seriously about extending this programme to all our Permata centres throughout the country," she said at the programme's official launch in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

NONEThe Roti 1Malaysia Programme is a private sector effort which collects surplus bread and pastries from five-star hotels for distribution to welfare homes, orphanages and other needy communities.

“Make sure the bread and the croissants reach the children, because I don't think our children from the Permata centres have tasted croissants," she said.

“So please give them a chance to taste croissants - not only children in homes, but also in the Permata centres".

Croissants are crescent-shaped and butter-layered bread rolls.

Rosmah is the patron of Permata, which oversees an early childhood programme for children under four years among the rural and urban poor.

She also commended the Roti 1Malaysia Charity programme for being able to carry out its charity works without government assistance.

"I know this Roti 1Malaysia programme doesn’t need any handouts form the government. I congratulate you all for working together.

“The money comes from the rich cooperate people, so you don't need any money from the government, that's very good," she quipped, to laughter from the floor.

‘More hotels wanted for Permata proposal’

Earlier, Roti 1Malaysia chairperson Anne Eu said some 14 hotels are part of the programme and hotels such as Resort World Genting, Berjaya Times Square and Sunway Resort have also agreed to ramp up their bread production, so that more people can benefit from it.

"The programme also helps to curb food wastage, defray running cost of the (welfare) homes, and most of all, it brings Malaysians together through the spirit of giving," she said.

Eu added that the programme had emulated the 1Malaysia slogan as, like the government's effort towards unity, it brings together the corporate and hospitality sectors, youth and other volunteer groups to provide healthy food to the needy.

When approached later, Eu said her programme officers will be sitting down with Permata officials to discuss Rosmah's proposal.

"With Permata, we will have to increase our capacity of production, so we need to get more hotels to join it," she said, adding that it will focus on Permata centres in the Klang Valley for now.

Thus far, the programme has distributed 1.142 million bread and pastries worth around RM5 million at hotel retail price in Klang Valley, with occasional visits to Kedah and Perak.

Eu said they plan to go national in the future.
Blocked by bodyguards
NONEOn another matter,Malaysiakiniattempted to approach Rosmah twice to garner her response on businessperson Deepak Jaikishan's relentless accusations against her, but was prevented by her bodyguards.

"Please lah, give us your cooperation," said one of the personnel, who blocked journalists from asking questions.
