PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli reiterated that the documents - invoices and payment slips - relating to the 19 pieces of jewellery allegedly bought for Prime Minister Najib Razak's wife in connection to a Ministry of Defense land deal that reeked of corruption came from controversial businessman Deepak Jaikishan.
"If the documents are forgeries, then Deepak must straightaway report to the police. But he has a slight problem there because the documents really came from him," Rafizi told a press conference on Thursday.
Rafizi explained that Deepak had approached members of his PKR party with the documents several months ago to highlight the matter for him but "at that point in time, I didn't want to take it on for the fear that the Umno press would spin it that it was all a PKR conspiracy to smear the PM and his wife".
"It was after the Boustead announcement last week that I decided to get involved. I must make it clear that PKR is pursuing the matter for public interest. There are very important issues of corruption involves and we don't want the entire matter to be overtaken by arguments over who gave who the documents."
"I think it was very clear from Deepak's outburst yesterday that he had tried to approach PKR leaders but they declined. I was very aprehensive at that time but now it is clear that Deepak acted on his own."
Rafizi was referring to a RM160million deal proposed by the public-listed Boustead Holdings Bhd, which is 61% owned by the Armed Forces Pension Fund or LTAT, to buy back Ministry of Defense land from Selangor Umno Wanita chief Raja Ropiaah for RM130 million and Deepak for RM30 million.
Deepak had previously revealed that he had paid "millions" to Najib's family to secure Najib's approval for the land deal. Najib was then the Defense minister. To invite Deepak to discuss further 'details'
When asked how Deepak could be considered as acting independently when PKR leaders such as Sivarasa Rasiah and N Surendran were acting as his lawyers, Rafizi replied that Sivarasa and Surendran only agreed to act for Deepak at the "last moment".
"You must know that Deepak approached certain PKR leaders way back, months ago. And I said 'no'. Later at the tail end, when no lawyer would act for, he approached Sivarasa and Surendran and out of courtesy, I think they agreed. I didn't know about that," said Rafizi.
Rafizi also said that PKR would now be agreeable to sit down and iscuss the matter with Deepak for "public interest"
"Deepak says he has a lot more to reveal and I have no doubt that he has a lot, lot of incriminating details about Najib and Rosmah. For public interest, and now that it has been established Deepak is acting on his own, we would invite him to discuss with our leaders so that we can get the authorities involved to investigate high-level corruption in the government which (is detrimental to public interest)."
