Suaram 5 quizzed for gathering at CCM office

Four Suaram activists and a lawyer were today quizzed by police under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for gathering at the Companies Commission Malaysia (CCM) headquarters in September last year.

Those who were quizzed are Suaram chairperson K Arumugam, secretariat member Cynthia Gabriel, and activists Wong Kar Fai and Sarah Deveraj, as well as lawyer Fadiah Nadwa Fikri.

They are being investigated under Section 9 of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 after CCM lodged a police report against them for gathering in front of their headquarters.

They presented themselves at the Petaling police station at 2.45pm today for questioning and were accompanied by four lawyers led by Latheefa Koya.

“We have no problem giving our cooperation in this investigation,” said Suaram coordinator E Nalini when met outside the station.

The group of activists had turned up at the CCM headquarters in September last year to show support as their leaders were being questioned by CCM at the venue.
Speaking to journalists later, Latheefa, who is also PKR legal bureau chief, said the police wanted to know the purpose of the gathering and who else were there at that time.

‘No questions answered’

However, she said her clients had decided not to answer the questions, adding that many of the queries were already publicly available information.

“My clients have a right to remain silent under Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code,” she said.

Meanwhile, when met outside the police station, Cynthia urged the authorities to cease “harassing” Suaram.

“We have been investigated (by various agencies) for the last six months, there is no reason for more investigations.

“Before this, we were also investigated by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and the CCM themselves, it is clear that they are fishing for a case against us,” she said.

In a related development, Suaram said it had on Jan 4 applied for leave for judicial review of ROS’ investigation of Suaram under Section 51(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The section requires an organisation or individual to produce property or documents for investigation.
