Syabas pump station unable to meet water demand

While operations at the Wangsa Maju pump station remain stable at a rate of 180 million litres per day (MLD), water production cannot cater to demands from residents of affected areas, said Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas).

In a statement yesterday, Syabas chief operating officer Lee Miang Koi said 97 percent of water woes in Gombak had been alleviated but 27,000 consumers in Kuala Lumpur still faced a water crisis.

pulau ketam klang water shortage 051108 01He said some consumers received supplementary water supply from the Sungai Langat Water Treatment Plant which currently operated above its capacity.

"However, Syabas hopes supplementary supply from the Sungai Langat Water Treatment Plant can help the current water supply situation," he said.

Lee said the installation of bypass pipes at the Wangsa Maju pump station was carried out on Jan 8. It is expected to be ready by June 14.

He said installation of the pipes was expected to channel about 30 MLD of treated water from the Dusun Kubung Pond and would be directly supplied to affected areas.

"Syabas estimates the water will be channelled within two days and reach some affected users by Jan 17, at the latest," he said.

Drop in water level

Meanwhile, Lee said an additional 86 tanker lorries were deployed, bringing the total to 2,891, since the Emergency Action Plan (ERP) was activated on Dec 29, last year.

To alleviate consumer woes, he said 950 operations division staff and contractors would be on hand to help the disabled carry and distribute water supply.

In another development, Syabas activated the Green Code ERP in Petaling at 9.30pm yesterday, following a drop in water levels at the Subang Airport Pond and Bukit Dengkil Pond, detected two days ago.

"The drop in water level at Syabas' main ponds occurred, following increased use of treated water by consumers, and it cannot cater to the increasing demand," said Lee.

Among the affected areas in Subang Jaya are SS12, SS13, SS14, SS15, SS16, SS17, SS18, SS19, part of SS & Kelana Jaya, Lembah Subang, Hyatt Saujana Glenhill, Jalan Subang Airport, Saujana O Lot (Temasya) and Taman Industri Hicom.
