MCMC probes Azmin over Project IC comments

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today recorded the statement of PKR deputy president Azmin Ali over comments on a YouTube video alleging former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s involvement in Project IC.

Azmin was called to give his statements and to be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, in relation to the YouTube video entitled ‘Program Tukar ke Orang Melayu (Project IC by Mahathir)’.

Azmin, when contacted by Malaysiakini, said the first comments on the video “was similar” to his media statement that was uplaoded on his blog on Jan 18.

“The investigations is to verify whether the comments on YouTubewas uploaded by me.

“This is a malicious claim and one that tries to divert attention from the real issue,” he said.
Two reports lodged
Azmin, who is also the Gombak MP and Bukit Antarabangsa state assemblyperson, said his statements were recorded by the MCMC information department deputy director Mohd Iqbal Mat Zain.

Mohd Iqbal had informed Azmin that two reports were lodged with the MCMC - one by MCMC itself and another by an individual who was not named.

Azmin added that his counsel CV Prabakaran was not allowed to be present when his statements were being recorded.

In a press statement on Jan 18, Azmin had urged the RCI to probe Mahathir on grounds that testimonies during the RCI public hearing had linked him with a clandestine effort to change Sabah's demographics by issuing citizenship to unqualified migrants - a practice known as Project IC.

NONEA portion of this statement was reproduced in the comments section of thevideo clip, which depicted an authority figure distributing identity cards to a group of foreigners - purportedly Bangladeshis - running while shouting "police!" several times, among other scenes.

It then shows the group apparently squatting on the ground after being arrested, but a police officer approaches them and says, "Why run? I just want to give identity cards."
