Ee Beng Guan: I am confused. On Tuesday at 7am, wehit them with all our might... bombs air strikes and all. The inspector-general of police (IGP) declared the operation a success as its 'objectives' were achieved.
What I want to know is what these objectives were. If you assault the enemy with air strikes etc, I assume the objectives must include killing them and if so, the success of the operation can only be measured by how of them were killed.
Yet one day later, there was no news of how many enemies were killed in the air strike. So how can it be a success? Surely the objective was not to frightened them, meaning to say we deliberately bombed the surrounding areas? That would be a strange thing to do.
I think whichever way you look at it, it was sheer incompetence in the execution of the operation. Either we can't hit our targets or our intelligence is so screwed up that we did not know they had left the target area. So which is which?

The political leadership should bear the responsibility for this humiliating fiasco. It's due to the failure of Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein and Defence Minister Zahid Hamidi to recognise the gravity of the situation that got eight of our men killed - with one reportedly beheaded and others mutilated.

These imbeciles could not be more wrong in their assessment of the intruders' intention. Instead of addressing the nation on Tuesday, PM Najib Razak met and briefed the ulamas.

1. Political/diplomatic failure by not averting this invasion by Sulu intruders who were unhappy with the Malaysian-sponsored peace deal between the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
2. Intelligence failure in which the Malaysian government was not alerted.
3. Gross failure by Malaysian government in treating these murderous Sulu as some long lost relatives and giving them time to consolidate on Sabah soil.
4. Gross failure in informing the press and international media of Malaysia's stance.
5. Gross failure in articulating from the very beginning that armed action by any party, regardless of religion, will not be tolerated.
6. Gross failure and non-cohesive line of command with specific orders to the police and army as to the end result desired.
7. Confusion when shooting started after the deadline.
8. Failure to have sufficient forces to handle the invasion even after three weeks.
9. Failure by the political leadership to take charge and take the nation into their confidence.
10. Loss of credibility through inaccurate statements, allowing the Sulu sultan to appear more credible.
Geronimo: Actually, there was no need for all the killings despite the fact that this was a military invasion.
Umno should have done what they have been doing for the past 30 years - walk up to them and offer them blue ICs (identity cards) plus citizenship and tell them to take an oath of allegiance to Umno that they will vote for them in the coming GE, and voila, problem solved.
Umno would have got an extra 200-300 votes. If more of them were to come, the better.
The only difference is that those who got their citizenship previously did not demand, but this group is doing so, and Umno hates people who demand. - Malaysiakini
