Tian Chua: I'm only responsible for direct quotes

PKR vice-president Tian Chua today distanced himself from a report in party mouthpiece Keadilan Daily that was published on March 1, quoting him on the Lahad Datu attacks.

Tian Chua, who is Batu MP, said he was only responsible for the direct quotes in the article.

NONE“There are things I did not say but the article should be read within context. I think it is how the editor wants to arrange the news, I am not apologising over this (publication) and will fight or clarify the matter in court,” he said in referring to Umno’s letter of demand sent to him.

“I am not responsible for what they write, but please look at what I had said,” he added.

Tian Chua, or his real name Chua Tian Chang, had seen many police reports lodged against him nationwide following the publication of the article quoting him as claiming that the Lahad Datu attacks were merely “a sandiwara” (drama) by Umno.

In putting matters in context, Tian Chua said Keadilan Daily had called him that morning about the attacks, at a time when there had been no verification of the validity of the attacks.

However, Tian Chua said, there were previous reports claiming opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and he had met Filipino leaders, as alleged by certain Umno-owned media and bloggers, before the Sabah incursion.

“I said it in the context of a media blackout over what is happening in Sabah, and the conspiracy to pin Anwar and me with the incursion.

“At that time, there was no verification on the attacks and deaths. I only said there was a conspiracy by the Umno government to divert the attention of Sabahans from the giving of identity cards to foreigners, and I was not referring to the attacks,” he said.

NONETian Chua said he, along with any other PKR and Pakatan leaders, are united in supporting the security forces comprising the police and army and had wished them well in looking after the security of the nation.

“We are united and we are patriotic and laud the sacrifice made by our security forces.

“We also urge the PM to reconvene Parliament for an emergency session to address the issue of the attacks on our sovereign land. If the Parliament could have an emergency session following attacks on Palestine, we should have one now following attacks on Lahad Datu,” he said.
“Our country is under attack. Parliament should hold the special session to discuss this and be united in facing the threat,” he said, pointing put that the government in the past had been swift in banning the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) and Bersih.

Tian Chua said he has instructed his lawyers to answer to the letter of demand brought against him by Umno lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun.

Also present were PKR treasurer and Selayang MP William Leong and PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
Warning to pro-Umno bloggers

Tian Chua said all that the BN and Umno machinery accused him of were mere slander, similar to the statement attributed to him as saying at a ceramah in Puchong that the commandos in Sabah “mati katak” (died in vain) when in fact he was in Johor.

“I would like to give the pro-Umno bloggers a warning that if they do not remove the posting attributed to me within 24 hours, I will take legal action,” he said.

Tian Chua had said that the false stories about him trying to undermine the security forces were concocted so that he would get the scorn of the people.

The postings appeared in blogs including Mymassa, Talk with Hand, Aloqlaloq and Papagomo.

He also explained that his visit to the Philippines in early February was to learn more about the Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman's relative Manuel Amalilio, who is being investigated in the Philippines for criminal breach of trust and is said to be protected in Sabah by Musa.

Call for police report against Najib

Meanwhile, Shamsul Iskandar urged Sabah PKR Youth members to lodge a police report against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on Moro National Liberation Front Nur Misuari statement that they were in Sabah because Najib said they could settle down there.

“This statement was quoted in the Manila Bulletin, which attributed the statement to Nur Misuari. I think Najib has to explain this.

“Following this, I have asked the PKR Youth members to lodge a police report tomorrow,” Shamsul Iskandar said.

He also called on the Sabah chief minister to call for a state legislative assembly to sitting to relay the right information on the situation in Sabah to the people.

This was important, he added, in order to allay public fears in Sabah over the lack of information on the attacks by the intruders from Sulu.
