1.7mil blacklisted drivers may have licences revoked

The 1.7 million drivers blacklisted by the traffic police may end up with their driving licences revoked if they refuse to pay their outstanding traffic summonses.

In a press conference today, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar announced the new suggestion after he claimed to be unsatisfied with the overall result of Ops Selamat during the 15 days of Hari Raya enforcement, which recorded 17,831 accidents and 258 deaths.

“I wasn’t satisfied with the outcome of Ops Selamat,” he said.

“We will not wait until the next festive season, we want to take more aggressive enforcement action as soon as possible.

azlan“We will start with tracking the 1.7 million road users who have yet to clear their summonses,” he said, adding that the police may consider having their driving licences revoked.

“We have proposed that talks be held with the Land Public Transport Commission (Spad)  and Road Transport Department (JPJ) to amend the law, so that we can take more drastic action to revoke their licences,” he said.

“Its seems that without drastic action, they are stubborn and refuse to clear the summonses,” he said, urging those with outstanding summonses to clear the soon before further action is taken upon them.

“All this while, those who are blacklisted can’t renew their licences and road tax..., but we want their licences revoked, too,” he said.

“We will initially be focusing on motorcyclists and commercial vehicle drivers, as we wish to discipline them first,” he said.

He added that the police will act drastically, especially on offences such as speeding, running red traffic lights and crossing double lines.

He opined that only full enforcement would make the drivers more responsible.
