Chua may contest, ‘menu’ taking shape

Dr Chua Soi Lek is expected to run for the MCA president post again should his men score in the upcoming division elections.
PETALING JAYA: MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek is expected to make a surprise return to defend his president post in the December’s party elections provided his supporters bag major victory in the MCA division elections next month.
FMT understands Chua, despite having pledged in May not to seek for re-election, is now considering to do so due to his detractors’ continuous attacks at him and his leadership.
Chua believed that his deputy Liow Tiong Lai was behind the group of MCA veterans and the Save Party Committee 3,0, which had openly called for his immediate resignation and criticising him for staying until December.
Chua felt offended that his “compromise” was not valued and hence he decided to throw Liow a head-to-head challenge to prove he is more popular in the party.
A MCA source told FMT that Chua was non-committal lately when asked if he would contest for the party president post again in December.
“But most of his answers were a ‘yes.’ Then I asked him about his promise (not to contest). His reply was that nothing is fixed in politics,” said the source which declined to be named.
Chua, however, is expected to finalise his decision only after the party’s division elections next month.
“He is waiting to see whether his men can make it to the central delegates. If most of his men were to lose, I expect him to just keep his promise and resign like a gentleman,” the source said.
Chua wields immense influence in Selangor, Kedah, Perlis and part of Johor, the state where he started his political career.
Liow, on the other hand, has the Pahang and Terengganu support while former president Ong Ka Ting is also rumoured to be his patron saint.
Chua to partner Gan, Liow to run with Wee
Should Chua decide to contest for the president’s post again, his running mate would most likely be the current vice- president Gan Ping Sieu, the source said.
He also said Chua and Liow are working on their lineup, or “menu” as what it is called in MCA, with Chua’s son Tee Yong and national organising secretary Tan Chin Meng contesting for the vice-president’s posts under Chua’s camp.
Kong Chong Ha, a Chua loyalist, is expected to remain as secretary-general on appointment should Chua’s camp wins.
According to the source, Liow’s lineup will include MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong – who is expected to run for the deputy president post; former Wanita MCA chief Chew Mei Fun; and central committee member Hou Kok Chung who is speculated to contest for the vice-president post.
“If Liow secures a win, he will appoint (Tanjung Malim MP and Ka Ting’s brother) Ong Ka Chuan as secretary-general,” he said.
Liow’s camp is said to have promised current vice-president Donald Lim – who is in the media limelight lately for lashing out at Chua over his miscalculated election strategy – the chairman’s post at the party-owned The Star newspaper if he stays out of the race.
Political horse-trading is intensifying at the largest Chinese party in the country as the clock ticks towards its central elections on Dec 21.
