'Conflicting claims on Genting crash warrant probe'

The contradictory statements that have been made by the government and the bus company following the Genting bus tragedy on Wednesday warrants a thorough investigation in order determine the truth, MCA said today.

NONEIn a statement, MCA publicity bureau chairperson Heng Seai Kie said that "truth and justice" are owed to the victims of the bus crash and their families.

She also said that the findings of the investigation committee that is probing the crash, which killed 37 people must be made public.

"As Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has proposed to set up a special investigation committee to probe into the cause of the accident, we urge the committee to leave no stone unturned. The findings must be made public," Heng said.

Heng was likely referring to the conflicting statements of Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) chairperson Syed Hamid Syed Albar's statement on Thursday that the bus involved was not blacklistedby any agencies.

NONEThis was despite checks byMalaysiakini confirming that the bus was blacklisted by the police.

In another instance, Syed Hamid (right) also said on Thursday that the bus was not overloaded according to the terms of license for a stage bus.
This contradicts a statement by Urban Well Being, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan on the day of the crash that the bus was overloaded.
Cause still unknown

To date, the government has yet to determine the exact reason behind the crash, while refusing to blame anyone in particular for the incident.

Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has said that the investigations will take time in order to determine the exact cause so that such incidences can the prevented from happening again.

He also said that the authorities are yet to retrieve the ill-fated bus from the ravine.

NONEThe stage bus plunged into a 200 feet ravine while descending the road from Genting resort at 2.20 pm on Wednesday, killing its driver and 37 passengers.

Another 16 were injured, and six are currently in critical but stable condition.

Those injured are being treated at the Bentong Hospital, Selayang Hospital, Kuala Lumpur Hospital and the Sungai Buloh Hospital.
