CSMU denies receiving MMC report

A Tamil vernacular daily had reported the Health Minister as saying that a report had been sent to the university to inform them of the reason behind its de-recognition.
PETALING JAYA: The Crimea State Medical University (CSMU) fiasco deepened when the university denied having received a report from the Malaysia Medical Council (MMC) or the Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam.
This revelation came about after FMT checked with the university in response to an article in a Tamil vernacular daily, Malaysia Nanban, which reported the Health Minister as saying that the ministry had forwarded MMC’s report to the Ukranian university.
The report was to inform the university as to why it was dropped from the second schedule of the Malaysian Medical Act (1971) thus de-recognising it.
The de-recognition of CSMU in 2005 drew flak from the former MIC president S Samy Vellu who alleged that the move was racially motivated as the majority of the Malaysian students were of ethnic Indian.
Increasing public pressure with the support of some NGOs had compelled the MMC to revisit the university in October 2012 but until today, the government agency has yet to make its findings public.
When contacted today, CSMU representative Dr A Subendran expressed shock over the Tamil news report.
“We (CSMU) are really shocked and sad with the article which misleads the public,” he said, adding that they hoped in future the minister and his ministry would check their facts before making press statements.
Meanwhile, CSMU graduate Mohd Amin Mohd Ismail urged the minister to reverse the Health Ministry’s decision.
Speaking to FMT, Mohd Amin said the university had sent an official letter informing MMC that they will fulfil all of MMC’s requirements to gain recognition, here.
“Why is the Health Minister mum on this matter?” he asked.
At a recent press conference, Dr Subramaniam promised to review the status of CSMU provided the university satisfies all the conditions set by the Ministry.
Following this, CSMU chancellor AA Babanin sent an official letter to inform Dr Subramaniam that the University is willing to comply with all of MMC’s requirements.
“It is already more than three weeks. But, the minister is still pretending to be in the dark over the issue. Why is he taking such a long time?” asked Mohd Amin.
