The National Fatwa Council today supported the Johor government's order to demolish the surau at the Tanjung Sutera resort in Sedili, Kota Tinggi, which was used by a group of Buddhist tourists for meditation.
Its chairperson Abdul Shukor Husin (left) told Berita Harian that when a surau or mosque has been desecrated and abused, it is wise to demolish it.“The actions by the resort owner to allow (people of) another religion to use the surau is wrong as it is considered syirik (polytheism of Allah). Hence, it is wise for the Johor Islamic Council to demolish the surau,” Shukor said.
The Johor sultan had ordered the council to demolish the building after the council completes its probe.
Shukor said he leaves it to the authorities to take action against the resort owner.
The owner of the resort is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for allegedly desecrating a place of worship.
