Gov't only wants to politicise Shiism, says Hadi

The government is more interested in politicising the Shia situation in Malaysia than to handle the “problem” in an intelligent manner, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

NONE“The government behaves like they want to make a political issue, not to act (on the matter).

“Actually, Shiism has existed for centuries in the Islamic world and is nothing new.

“It is just like other sects, although we do not deny that Shiism is not suitable to be practised in Malaysia,” said Hadi (right) in aHarakah report yesterday.

“What I see is that the government is not so much wanting to handle the matter, but to make it a political issue.

“By right, discussions amongst the sects has to be carried out in the intellectual arena, among ulama who are knowledgeable in the field, not by those who are not familiar,” he told the party organ.
Hadi, who is also Marang MP, said the best way to solve the Shiite controversy was to hold closed discussions in an academic and knoweledgable manner.
'Some Shiites also Muslims'
He added that while there are Shiites who have strayed from the Islamic teachings, there are also those who are following Islamic principles.

“Shiites are still considered Muslims, those in Iran, Iraq and in southern Lebanon. They are allowed to conduct their haj in Mecca as the ulama agree they are Muslims.

Hadi said it was only that certain rituals that some Shiites performed were against the sunnah and this ought to be corrected in a "learned manner" and not “arbitrarily”.

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches conclusion, the government has trained its guns on alleged propagation of Shiite teachings in the country, and suggesting political links to the issue.

Last week Bernama reported Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom saying those who practised Shiism in Malaysia will be dealt with severely.
An NGO the Islamic Renaissance Front meanwhile disagreed with the government position on the matter, commenting, “The state has no business to dictate what people should believe in and which denomination they chose to subscribe to.”
