Guan Eng: Where are all the guns coming from?

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has queried how criminals managed to obtain so many firearms in a short time that led to a sudden spike in violent crimes.

Lim said even if former Emergency Ordinance (EO) detainees were to be blamed for the recent string of violent crimes, it still begged the question of where they obtained the weapons.

"Blaming the repeal of the EO that released many hardened criminals, does not fully explain how a ready supply of guns has suddenly surged in Malaysia.

"How did the guns enter Malaysia? The police must trace and stop the source that supplies such weapons," he said in a press statement today.

He pointed out that despite the death penalty for gun possession, secret societies are still able to obtain easy supply of guns.

NONELim (right), who is also Penang chief minister, reiterated that more police personnel should be reassigned to fight crime.

"This is unacceptable as the number of police personnel involved in fighting crime should not be 9 percent but at least 50 percent.

"In other words there should be at least 56,000 police personnel in uniform patrolling the streets and not the present 10,150," he said.

Value expected

He added that the rakyat expected value for money in receiving police protection against crime as allocation for the force had increased by 65 percent, from RM4.22 billion in 2007 to RM6.98 billion in 2012.

The Bagan MP said that the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) should also be formed to check abuse of power and corruption in the police force as well as to ensure efficiency and professionalism.

"Further, this will stop abuses of power that allows the police to be used as a political tool against political opponents of BN instead of fighting criminals," he said.

He added that DAP will hold an emergency central working committee tonight to discuss the deteriorating crime situation that has turned into a "full-blown" crisis.

"The spate of shootings throughout the country is unprecedented with a shooting almost one per day recorded since the end of last month," he said.
