MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek has claimed that he never announced whether he would defend his position or otherwise in the coming party polls, but his deputy Liow Tiong Lai noted that his boss had made a promise and believes Chua would honour it.
According to Oriental Daily today, Liow said he was willing to bear the responsibility of contesting for the post of party president, and reform the party, because Chua had announced that he would not seek re-election.
"I announced I would contest (for MCA president) because he (Chua) promised not to defend his position. I believe he is a man of his word," he said.
After MCA’S dismal performance in the last general election, with the party capturing only seven parliamentary seats and 11 state seats, Chua had said he would not defend his position in the coming party election, at the end of this year.
On July 20, Liow had announced that he would contest the MCA president post in the coming party election.
However, on Aug 9, it was reported that Chua said that he had never announced if he would contest or not.
Asked if MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong or former deputy higher education minister Hou Kok Chung would be his best running mate for the deputy president's post, Liow did not give a direct answer.
Liow reiterated that the call for MCA to rescind its decision not to be part of the federal cabinet or decline government positions was not his personal stand but the suggestion of Chinese associations in a closed-door dialogue session with the party.
"As the chief of MCA’s reform committee, I was expressing the expectations and suggestions of the Chinese associations, but it was misinterpreted by others saying that I wanted official positions,” he said.
