Jakim: Punish Maznah to teach a lesson

The Islamic Affairs Development Department (Jakim) has reiterated its call for action against dog trainer Maznah Yusof, saying that this would serve as a lesson to society.

NONEAccording to New Straits Times, Jakim director-general Othman Mustapha said: "If action is taken against her, it will serve as a lesson to her, in particular, and to society as a whole, not to do it again."

Last week, Jakim had informed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission that they found the video, in which Maznah is seen celebrating Aidilfitri with her dogs, asinsulting to Islam.

Othman reportedly told NST: "In Islam, all animals are the same, except in terms of purification, where the concept differs.
"What was demonstrated by Maznah is wrong and seen as intentional. What more, when recorded for public viewing."

Othman went on to add that the video created the impression that Maznah's actions are acceptable in Islam.

Maznah, who was released on bond last week, has insisted that her video did not insult Islam and that she was merely trying to show how cleanliness applies to all animals.

She is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code, which deals with causing disharmony on grounds of religion, and Section 4 of the Sedition Act.
'Maznah will reject any order'
In a joint statement, Maznah's lawyers N Surendran and Latheefa Koya pointed out that Jakim has no legal authority to order her to explain the video or present herself before the authority.
NONE"(Maznah) will not comply with any order to attend before Jakim. We further state that any order by Jakim compelling her to attend will be unlawful and unconstitutional," they said.
"Jakim is is an administrative body with no powers of compulsion against any citizen. It is surprising that the director-general does not seem to understand the duties and powers of Jakim."
Furthermore, the lawyers claimed, Jakim has not acted fairly and justly to Maznah from the start of the controversy.
"Despite ongoing police investigations, Jakim issued statements highly prejudicial to her legal defence; Jakim further usurped judicial functions and pronounced that the video insults Islam, without giving her the opportunity to defend herself.
"To condemn a person without affording her an opportunity to be heard is against the norms of every civilized system of justice."
They said it is shocking that, despite their repeated protests, Jakim has continued to interfere in the powers and jurisdiction of the judiciary by stating once again yesterday that the video is insulting to Islam.
Both urged Jakim to "immediately stop issuing statements prejudicial to our client's legal defence".
