LOOK HOW FAST COPS CAN ACT! Police record Chieng Jen's statement
KUCHING : Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen spent two hours today at the Simpang Tiga police headquarters here
where his statement was taken following three reports against him in Peninsular Malaysia.
One of the reports was lodged by Umno Youth after Chong, who is also the Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament, had alleged that the crime rate was allowed to rise to justify the re-introduction of the Emergency Ordinance (EO) as called for by some Barisan Nasional leaders.
Pending State Assemblywoman Violet Yong, who was present at Chong's press conference, also gave her statement to the police including several reporters who covered the event last Monday.
Dudong State Assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong acted as counsel for Chong and Yong.
Meanwhile, SUPP Youth led by its chief Tan Kai and secretary-general Wilfred Yap arrived at the police headquarters to accompany Youth member Sivanesan Sanmugalingam to lodge a report against Chong.
Speaking to reporters later, Chong said that it was a waste of time for the police to take down his statement. He said that the police should put their time and energy in combating the rise in crimes instead of wasting their time on the report lodged by Umno Youth.
He also lashed out at SUPP Youth for lodging the report against him saying that the party was avoiding the real issue in combating the rising crime cases.
"SUPP Youth is clearly dancing to the tune set by Umno," he said, adding that the escalating cases of crimes – including murders, housebreaking and thefts, robberies and snatch thefts – remain unsolved.
Tan Kai, when asked by reporters, claimed that Chong's statement was very damaging to the police and that he did not think the government was prepared to put the lives of the people in danger as Chong had suspected.
