MMC officials under MACC probe

Two of its officials, one a committee member, are being investigated for alleged abuse of power.
PETALING JAYA: Sources revealed that the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) has started investigations into an alleged abuse of power involving two top Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) officials.
One official is said to be a committee member in MMC, while the other is an officer holding an important post in the council. The MACC probe is a result of two reports lodged against the individuals respectively.
A source told FMT that one of the MMC official is being investigated for allegedly misusing his position to force an international university to arrange for a “free overseas trip.”
Using his post in a MMC delegation that evaluated an international university last year, the committee member was accused of urging the said varsity to provide a “free” flight ticket to London for a personal trip.
It was alleged that his London trip was made four days before his official visit to the international university to review its status.
The second case involved a MMC’s top level officer who is also alleged to have abused his power and provided false claims for his working visits.
It was alleged that this official had misused his authority to travel on business class while travelling around the globe for the purpose of giving accreditation to several medical universities.
The officer is only entitled to travel economy class for working visits.
The MACC report also said that the said top level official has always been part of the evaluation committee delegate, despite not being a MMC committee member.
The Malaysian Medical Act 1971 indicates that only a MMC committee member can be delegate in any evaluation committee.
The officer was also alleged to have gone on a “vacation” in Dublin, Ireland ,with the cost of the trip borne by a local private college.
MMC is a supreme body making decisions on medical policies in Malaysia. In addition, it also serves as a regulatory body to monitor medical doctors in the country.
Despite several attempts, FMT failed to get MACC to respond to the matter.
