NEXT, HOMEMADE EXPLOSIVES: Tourist hurt by 'bomb' thrown at car by another car
GEORGE TOWN - A 21-year-old Chinese national was injured when shrapnel from a homemade explosive thrown from a car onto another car struck her as she walked along Love Lane here today.
In the 2.30pm incident, an unidentified suspect threw the explosive at a Honda Civic that he was trailing in his Nissan Grand Livina after ramming into it.
The explosion damaged the Honda Civic and injured the tourist from China who was walking beside the car.
The owner of the damaged car, who was on his way back to his office in the area, claimed that he was trailed by the other driver as he drove along Lebuh Farquhar, Northeast district police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said.
The man said the car, believed to be driven by an Indonesian, had rammed into his car several times before following him into Love Lane.
"When the vehicles entered Love Lane, the Nissan driver threw the explosive at the Honda's bumper, causing an explosion," Gan said.
Special team
Gan said the Nissan continued to trail the damaged Honda until Jalan Burma before speeding off upon seeing policemen patrolling the area.
He added that the owner of the car, who was with a friend, drove to the nearby Central police station where he lodged a report.
Meanwhile, Kelantan police have set up a special team to investigate an incident in which a package exploded on Sunday, killing a primary school clerk in Tumpat.
The team is headed by Tumpat police deputy chief DSP Shariffuddin Yusof.
State police deputy chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said initial investigations revealed the package contained homemade explosives.
"We have sent samples gathered from the scene to the Chemistry Department," he told reporters at the state police contingent headquarters.
In the 11am incident, Mohd Yusrizal Mat Zain, 32, who worked at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Manek Urai, Kuala Krai, was killed on the spot when the package he retrieved from the roof of a multi-purpose vehicle exploded.
The incident occurred at the compound of his in-laws' house in Taman Seri Periok, Kampung Periok.
