Selangor cops arrest 683, remand 211 in special ops


A total of 683 people were arrested while 211 others were remanded up to 6am today in Selangor, under Ops Cantas Khas launched in the state on Sunday. 

Selangor deputy police chief A ThaiveeganSelangor police chief A Thaiveegan said those remanded are being held for “various offences” while the rest have been released after their details were recorded.

According to a posting on the official Selangor police Facebookpage, Thaiveegan told reporters this morning that premises and vehicles had been searched.

“Various weapons like machetes, toy guns, knives and batons (kayu cota) were seized during the special operations,” the posting reads 

Thaiveegan also called on members of the public to cooperate with police and provide any relevant information to assist in the ongoing operation. 

Ops Cantas Khas is an operaqtion specific to Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, separate from the nationwide Ops Cantas.

However, both have the same objective of getting criminals off the streets, following a recent increase in shootings and violent crime. 

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said police are using the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 to carry out Ops Cantas, which has seen roadblocks being mounted nationwide.
