Shahrizat’s appointment won’t affect BN

MIC vice-president says she must be given the benefit of the doubt as she has a role to play in community development.
PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional leaders believe that the appointment of Shahrizat Abdul Jalil as special adviser to the Prime Minister will not negatively affect the coalition as a whole.
The BN leaders were today responding to the appointment of the scandal-ridden Umno Wanita chief, who was forced to step down as Cabinet minister following the exposé on alleged corruption and mismanagement in the running of the National Feedlot Centre (NFC), which was headed by her husband.
It was reported earlier this week that the controversial leader was appointed as a special adviser to Najib Tun Razak to oversee the development of women entrepreneurs and professionals.
“Elections are just over so whatever effect (on BN) would be before (her appointment) and not now,” MIC vice-president SK Devamany told FMT.
“It is also the prerogative of the PM to appoint who he wants. She is the Wanita Umno chief, so he probably needs her for empowerment,” he added.
Devamany also said it was wrong to presume Shahrizat was guilty of the NFC scandal before the court proceedings end.
“We must give her the benefit of the doubt as she has a role to play in the development of the community,” he said.
“She did a good job in the women’s ministry, so her experience is much needed,” he added.
His party colleague and MIC strategic adviser S Vell Paari shared the same sentiment and said the appointment would not affect BN.
“I know Shahrizat quite well and she is a very hardworking lady,” he said.
“As far as Shahrizat’s appointment is concerned, it is the PM’s right to appoint whoever he wants. I really don’t think it would affect BN as a whole.”
‘Problem only if Shahrizat’s role is widened’
Meanwhile, Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang believed Shahrizat’s appointment would affect BN “only if her scope is widened.”
“I am not concerned if her role is limited to women’s affairs. We are looking at talent and experience and the PM obviously sees her capabilities and experience (in this field),” he said.
However, he added, if Shahrizat’s role were to be extended to “other areas like agriculture and feedlot,” he would speak up against the appointment.
“Of course if they widen the scope then I may say (it) differently, but at the moment her role is to advise on women’s affairs. I have no objection to that because she has been in the field for ages,” he said.
“The PM knows the risks he is taking (by appointing Shahrizat). But at the end of the day, we want to see results and she has the talent and experience.”
While reports have mentioned about Shahrizat’s new role, she herself had kept mum when asked to confirm the appointment.
Likewise, at the Malaysian Treasury’s (Finance Ministry) Hari Raya celebration on Monday, Najib said there would be no announcement on the matter yet.
However, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim yesterday said Shahrizat was not an adviser to the ministry, which means her role would only be to advise the prime minister on women issues.
