MP wants explanation on why Bernas motion rejected

PKR's Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung expressed disappointment that his attempt to move a motion to protest the delisting of Padi Beras Nasional Berhad (Bernas) from Bursa Malaysia was rejected at yesterday's Dewan Rakyat sitting.
Gooi said Parliament Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia rejected the motion before allowing it to be read first in the House.

"The normal practice is to allow the motion to be read first before rejecting it," Gooi, told Malaysiakini.

"This had been done in other cases but why was I not allowed to do it?", he queried.

NONEGooi (left) said it was important to at least allow Parliament to hear the motion as it sought the Agriculture Ministry's reply on why the government did not prevent the delisting.

"Why didn't the government use its golden share or rights in its corporate agreement with Bernas signed on Jan 18, 1996 which gave it veto power to halt the matter in view of the country's future and security, Gooi added.

Instead, Pandikar Amin said that after studying the motion, he found it "not necessary" to be brought before the House as Putrajaya was already reviewing the issue.

But Gooi said the Ministry has not addressed the concerns that the delisting would eventually lead to Bernas being monopolised by BN cronies.

"Due to all these concerns, I raised the motion to debate the issue during Parliament proceedings, before it is too late to salvage the situation, after the agency is delisted," said Gooi, who is also Kedah PKR vice-chief.

Several Pakatan Rakyat MPs, including Pokok Sena MP, tried to challenge the speaker's decision made at 11.30am yesterday, backing Gooi's proposed motion.

However, their attempt was cut short after 15 minutes when the Speaker warned that any MP further opposing his decision would be asked to leave the House.
