A two-day rebellion appears to have been brought to an end with ringleader former Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Said expected to retract his resignation from Umno today.
Newly-appointed MB Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman (left) announced this after a meeting with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in Putrajaya today.
Ahmad Razif also said that Ajil assemblyperson Ghazali Taib, who quit Umno alongside Ahmad, is also returning to the party's fold.
"The (state legislative assembly) speaker said that he has not received any letter stating that they have returned (to Umno but) we are confident that given a little time, the number of BN assemblypersons (in the state) will go back to 17.
"We were informed that there is communication between the prime minister and Ahmad and it is positive.
"I have worked with Ahmad (right) for six years and God-willing he will return to us," Razif said after heading a delegation to meet the PM today.
The delegation made up of 13 BN assemblypersons and the Terengganu speaker also met with the cabinet.
However, when contacted, Ahmad's aide declined to confirm whether the Kijal assemblyperson will retract his resignation letter.
Ahmad has called for a press conference at his home in Kemaman today.
No exco reshuffle
Neither Ahmad or Ghazali were present at the Putrajaya meeting. Also absent was Hulu Besut representative Nawi Mohamad.
Razif said that Nawi is ill but still supports BN.
If Ahmad and Ghazali take back their quit letters, BN maintains its two-seat majority, holding 17 seats against Pakatan Rakyat's 15.
Yesterday, Bukit Besi assemblyperson Roslee Daud (left), the third assemblyperson who announced he was quitting Umno, was reported to have returned to the fold.
Roslee was present at the Putrajaya press conference.
Razif, who clocked in as MB today said that he will not reshuffle the executive council or appoint a new speaker.
Vowing to continue Ahmad's good work, Razif said that the meeting with Najib was to allow the Terengganu representatives an opportunity to share their views with the central leadership.
"What had happened has brought Terengganu BN closer to the PM," he said, also thanking Ahmad for his contributions to the state.
