MIC to set up panel for Zarina-like cases

MIC Youth together with other Indian-based NGOs will form a council to look into and resolve cases pertaining to conversion, said its chief C Sivarraajh.

In view of this, he invited all quarters, regardless of political affiliation, to work together and participate in the council.

Sivarraajh said that MIC Youth is concerned about the conversion conflicts.

"We have to look in this matter seriously and find solutions to it," he added in a statement.

Meanwhile, MIC Youth would also provide legal assistance to Zarina Abdullah Majid, 31, with regard to changing the status of her religion in her identity card.

Sivarraajh said he has instructed the wing’s legal bureau and his deputy Thinalan T Rajagopalu to look into the matter.

Zarina had her wedding at a Hindu temple last Sunday disrupted by Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) officers who suspected her of being a Muslim, partly due to her name.

She had claimed that she was born and raised a Hindu but was registered as a Muslim by her estranged father, who had converted to Islam but has long since left the family.

Earlier today, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang urged the government to set up a special committee to sort out cases where non-Muslims have been registered as Muslims with the authorities.

He said that the committee should be set up by the Cabinet and comprise the National Registration Department (NRD) and Islamic authorities.
