'Sept 16 DPM' Anifah to rebut Anwar's allegations Oct 30
KUALA LUMPUR - Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman  will take the stand on Oct 30 to rebut opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's allegations against him.
He is being sued for RM100 million by the latter for defamation.
Judicial Commissioner Siti Khadijah S.Hassan Badjenid fixed the date in chambers today when the case came up for case management. Anifah's counsel Jeffrey John told reporters that the defendant would be calling three other witnesses.
They are Tenom Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Raime Unggi, Sabah former chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee and Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim, who was a former Bayan Baru MP.
Counsel said another five witnesses would be subpoenaed to testify in the trial, among them, Beluran MP, Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee. Meanwhile, Anwar's lawyer Razlan Hadri Zulkifli said the court had set four days, from Nov 25 to continue the trial.
On Aug 27, the plaintiff closed its case after calling Anwar as its sole witness. Anwar filed the suit against Anifah and the Malaysian government on May 27, 2009.
He alleged that the minister's remarks at a media conference in Washington, where then US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was also present, had tarnished his image.
The plaintiff accused Anifah of depicting him as a person who was unfit to hold a political or any office and dangerous to Malaysian society.
Anwar also alleged that the defendant's remarks which were widely reported in the local and foreign media, had cast imputations on his character and directly and indirectly portrayed him as unethical, unprincipled and corrupt. – Bernama
