KUALA LUMPUR - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak brushed aside criticisms levelled against him by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, saying he still commanded the support of the Umno leadership.
Speaking to reporters after chairing an Umno supreme council meeting at the Putra World Trade Centre here, Najib said a number of party leaders had spoken against Dr Mahathir’s recent statement.
“Many Umno leaders have made their comments on the matter and they have made it clear that they still support the current leadership. At the same time, they still respect Dr Mahathir as an elder statesman,” he said.
Najib, who is also Umno president, said he regarded Dr Mahathir’s criticism as an internal party matter.
“We hope this matter can be resolved in the best way possible for Umno as a whole,” Najib said, adding that he does not rule the possibility of holding a dialogue with Dr Mahathir in the near future.
The former Prime Minister in a blog posting on Aug 19 had criticised Najib’s administration, saying leaders who were not criticised would not realise there were mistakes.
He had also said that leaders would only rectify their errors quickly when faced with criticisms. -NST
