Inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar said the police will be investigating DAP lawmaker Nga Kor Ming under the Sedition Act for his Facebook post that allegedly insulted the Aidilfitri festivities.
“We have received several reports regarding the Facebook post by Nga, so we have started investigations under Section 298 of the Penal Code and also the Sedition Act,” Khalid told reporters at Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s Hari Raya open house at his official residence in Putrajaya today.
Nga, who is Taiping MP, on July 6 posted a caricature of children and guests receiving Aidilfitri ‘duit raya’ cash packets and likened it to receiving ‘dedak’ or bribery.
The post has since been removed from his Facebook page.
The IGP cautioned people against making such insensitive statements, especially in a diverse society such as Malaysia.
“If he (Nga) truly has made such a statement, as we’re still investigating, it is something that is trying to belittle Islam.
“That is something that should not be done, especially by someone who is a YB,” he said.
Nga had previously landed himself in trouble with another Facebook post on July 5, which featured a picture of a lighthouse overlaid over the US flag and a Hari Raya greeting.
That post had also since been deleted after drawing brickbats from both netizens and politicians.
Section 298 of the Penal Code deals with the “uttering of words with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person”. - Mkini
