Name and shame Najib, Dr M tells foreign nations

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on other nations, including the United States and Australia, to name and shame Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over the 1MDB scandal.
"I know most foreign countries are rather reluctant to come out straight and say that the prime minister is the one who is guilty of all of these things," he told ABC in an interview.
Though the US Department of Justice civil suits in relation to alleged misappropriated 1MDB funds did not mention Najib, it made repeated references to one 'Malaysian Official 1'.
Speculation is rife that based on the information provided in the suits, 'Malaysian Official 1' is the prime minister, who was the 1MDB board of advisers chairperson.
The DOJ documents also implicated Najib's stepson Riza Aziz, and Jho Low, a Malaysian businessman who is said to be close to the prime minister’s family.
According to the documents, the alleged embezzlers used 1MDB funds to settle gambling debts, buy lavish properties, including a penthouse in Manhattan, a mansion in Los Angeles, artwork, and even a private jet.
The funds were also allegedly used to finance the Hollywood movie "Wolf of Wall Street", starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
The movie was produced by Red Granite production firm, which was co-founded by Riza.
Responding to a question from ABC if he would like a referendum on Najib's leadership, Mahathir said it would depend on the government approving the referendum.
"Because it (the government) will use all the police power that it has to stop us from doing anything at all," he added.
Mahathir also said Malaysians had not taken to the streets to express outrage because they were "very timid people".

"They are not violent. They don't express themselves openly," he added.
Reiterating his call for a peaceful protest, Mahathir said: "They are unwilling to be seen protesting even, but if they have a protest then I will be supportive of them," he added.
Najib has denied abusing public funds for personal gain, and blamed such allegations on Mahathir and those conspiring to topple him from power.
Attorney-general Mohamad Apandi Ali has also cleared the prime minister of any wrongdoing. - Mkini
