SEPANG - Airports in the country are on “very high” security alert following terror attacks at several airports worldwide.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said airports had been on the “amber-level” alert since the attack at the Brussels Airport on March 22.
“Since the attacks, we have been on threat level amber, and we have maintained that until now,” he said.
“The public can be assured of their safety as we are in full control of security issues.”
Amber-level alerts include tighter controls over the issuance of airport security passes, increase in patrol frequency by aviation security personnel, increased inspection on all access doors as well as tightening the overall security checks at all checkpoints involving passengers, goods and airport personnel.
Liow urged the public to be calm but vigilant and to cooperate with the authorities by providing any information which could be useful to their efforts.
He also urged the public not to leave their luggage unattended in public places, which could cause alarm.
“If you see any unattended baggage, please alert the airport’s security so they can quickly deal with the situation,” he said.
In March, terrorists killed 32 people in Belgium in a simultaneous attack on a metro station and airport.
On Tuesday, three perpetrators killed 44 people at Turkey’s Ataturk International Airport in a suicide bombing and shooting attack.
The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the Brussels attacks and has been blamed for the incident in Turkey. They have frequently targeted transportation hubs which are considered “soft targets”.
On the search for MH370, Liow said the operation has temporarily stopped due to bad weather and would continue in October.
“We owe it to the families to complete the search. Of the 120,000sq km search area, 107,000sq km has been covered,” he said.
“We will also host a triparte ministrial meeting in Kuala Lumpur on July 19 with representatives from China and Australia to discuss the way forward on the search.”
Liow had earlier launched the iWalk walkalators at klia2 yesterday.
The airport is fitted with 28 walkalators to help reduce the amount of time it takes to get to the aircraft gates. Additionally, 25 buggies will be provided by the airport. - Malay Mail
