Day One ends, Hadi's controversial motion still out of reach

The first day of this year's third parliament session ended with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's controversial 'hudud' motion still out of reach.
Parliamentary debates ended midway through the second reading of the Advocates Ordinance (Sabah) (Amendments) Bill, which was second on the order paper, and would continue tomorrow.
Hadi's motion to table a private member's bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act was fourth on the order paper.
This reduced the chances of Hadi's motion being debated in the coming days, as it could be pushed back further down the order paper by other government bills and motions.
By next week, the debates would focuss entirely on the government's budget for 2017. Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is scheduled to table the budget on Friday.
The debates would only progress to other matters on the last two days of this parliament session, which ends on Nov 24.
Uncertainties ahead
However, should Hadi's motion be debated, the usually predictable voting process would be interesting to watch.
MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong said BN had reached a consensus on the matter, but declined to reveal the details.
"Ask the BN secretary-general (Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor)," he told reporters earlier today.
Meanwhile, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) said while they agreed with the motion in principle, it must be in line with the constitution, and certain things needed to be cleared up.
Likewise, PKR vice-president Tian Chua told reporters the party agreed that syariah courts should be strengthened, but said Hadi's motion had ambiguities that needed to be ironed out.

DAP's leadership was however evasive on the matter, with Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang asking reporters to quiz other leaders for the party's stand.
It is understood that Pakatan Harapan has yet to hold a meeting to discuss the matter.
Previously, the motion had made it to the debate stage in the last parliament session after Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said bumped it up the order paper at Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's behest.
Hadi however decided to postpone the debate to this current session. -Mkini
