A Myanmar garbage collector paid the price today for illegally carrying a samurai sword in public.
Omar Kassim Mohd Jalal, 30, who holds a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) card, received five years' imprisonment from Ampang Sessions Court judge Azrul Darus for possession of the sword at Jalan Bunga Raya, Pandan Indah in Kuala Lumpur at 4.50pm on Oct 17.
According to the facts of the case presented by deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Zuhaini Mahamad Amin, police conducting a special patrol at the Ketua Polis Negara housing area in Jalan Bunga Raya intercepted a man behaving suspiciously while riding a motorcycle.
An inspection found a sheathed 0.4-metre-long samurai sword inside the basket of the Myanmar national's motorcycle.
Omar, who was unrepresented, said in mitigation that he was his family's main breadwinner and had a child aged only two weeks old.
