KUALA LUMPUR— Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today he had just made a phone call to United States president-elect Donald Trump to reestablish their relationship.
Najib said he congratulated the billionaire on his victory, and the two have agreed to strengthen the ties between Malaysia and the US.
“Great to reconnect with president-elect Donald J. Trump following his outstanding win. Earlier today, we had a very warm and productive telephone conversation,” Najib said on his official Facebook page.
“Amongst other matters, we talked about economic growth in the US and Malaysia. I congratulated him on his election victory, and we agreed to further strengthen US-Malaysia ties.”
In an interview with Sunday Star today, Najib said he had called Trump a few times after first meeting in a golf game in the US, but have not talked since the latter went on his presidential campaign.
Najib said several Malaysian leaders had visited the upscale Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster near New York several years ago and Trump had decided to join the game after hearing about his Malaysian guests.
Trump had partnered Najib, and the pair won the game.
The photo they took to commemorate the day, with Trump’s autograph and the words “To my favourite Prime Minister”, still stands in Najib’s office.
After Trump’s shock win on November 8, Najib said the magnate’s appeal to Americans who want to see their government more focused on their interests and welfare, and less embroiled in foreign interventions that have proven to run counter to US interests had resulted in his victory.
Najib later expressed hope that Trump would approve the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement and not scrap it as pledged in the latter’s presidential campaign.
