MALAYSIAN CHINESE MOVIE MAKES HISTORY FOR COUNTRY: ‘HOUSE OF HAPPINESS’ WINS AWARD AT VANCOUVER FILM FESTIVAL

KUALA LUMPUR – Local Chinese-language radio station 988’s first full-length feature film, A House of Happiness, has been named Best Cantonese Film at the Maple Leaf Awards under the Sixth Vancouver Chinese Film Festival in Canada.
One of four Malaysian films screened in competition, A House of Happiness was the only Malaysian production to win an award at the festival organised by the Vancouver Chinese Film Festival Association at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby, British Columbia, last Saturday.
The other three films – Haunted Hotel (2017), Show Me Your Love (2016) and The Dream Boyz (2015) – were also works by scriptwriter-cum-director Ryon Lee.
A House of Happiness was helmed by first-time director JY Teng, scripted by the prolific Lee, and produced by 988’s Chan Fong and Lomo Pictures’ Aron Koh.
Elated by the win, Koh said he was hopeful that the film would reach a wider audience.
“Now, we have to bring it to more film festivals. We will travel to more countries to share it with more people. We hope to make more films with 988 in future,” he said.
In the family-oriented flick released early this year, veteran Hong Kong actor Richard Ng and Ipoh-born Hong Kong-based actress Mimi Chu portray two bickering but adorable senior citizens.

Major supporting acts include Malaysians Louisa Chong, Steve Yap and 988 deejays Cheryl Lee and Hau Min.
Originally released in Malaysia in Cantonese, A House of Happiness was also released in China last month, where it was dubbed in Mandarin and retitled This Crazy Year for the mainland audience.
Apart from Malaysia and China, A House of Happiness has also played in other Chinese-speaking countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
