IPOH – Mentri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu will meet state Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria to explain the state’s stand on the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
“I will see him to give a clear picture. Recognition of the certificate is among the promises in Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) manifesto during the 14th General Election.
“Promises to the rakyat must be fulfilled, there is a lot of misunderstanding on the matter,” he told reporters after chairing the weekly exco meeting here today.
“The state recognises UEC as long as the holder obtains a credit in the SPM Bahasa Malaysia paper.
“Everyone should be able to communicate with each other.
“We will not hold them back or deprive them from getting opportunities,” he added.
Earlier today, Harussani said national unity would be affected if the government recognises the UEC from Chinese independent schools.
The cleric said the Chinese-language school leaving certificate threatens the status of Bahasa Malaysia as the national language.
“The racial unity is premised on Bahasa Malaysia as the medium of instruction in the National Education Policy,” he said in a statement today.
“It will be upsetting if the UEC is recognised because it will open a space for other races by raising the spirit of racialism that can jeopardise existing harmony in the country.”
