PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has proposed caning as a punishment for those convicted of corruption.
MACC chief Mohd Shukri Abdull said it would reflect the seriousness in fighting corruption.
“It will be a better deterrent,” he told the media after attending a prayer session in conjunction with the 51st anniversary of the formation of MACC tonight.
He said under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, the punishment for those involved in bribery was a maximum jail sentence of 20 years, besides the fine.
“The 20 years imprisonment is the maximum sentence, but most of them will appeal in court and some are jailed for only a day,” he said.
He said bribery would lead to other crimes, adding that the caning punishment should be studied in detail.
“I am serious on the proposal,” he said.
Shukri had earlier proposed that the government amend the law to allow heavier punishments for corruption. -FMT
