SUNGAI PETANI: Mohamed Azmin Ali continued to strengthen his position in Kedah, winning the battle for the PKR deputy president’s post in the state’s party election.
The unofficial results showed that Azmin, who is also economic affairs minister, garnered 3,754 votes while his challenger, Rafizi Ramli, secured 3,111 votes in the election, involving all 15 divisions in the state.
The election yesterday involved five divisions – Jerai, Merbok, Sungai Petani, Padang Serai and Kulim-Bandar Baharu. It saw Azmin securing 2,606 votes compared with Rafizi’s 2,080 votes.
In Friday’s polls, involving the other 10 divisions, Azmin garnered 1,148 votes while Rafizi secured 1,031 votes.
The 10 divisions were Kuala Kedah, Alor Setar, Kubang Pasu, Pendang, Sik, Padang Terap, Pokok Sena, Baling, Langkawi and Jerlun.
Fresh polls are being conducted in Kedah following protests over the e-voting system, among others. This led to the earlier party election being cancelled on Sept 22. -FMT
