Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has urged the government to secure bipartisan support to pass Budget 2021 instead of declaring an emergency.
Syed Saddiq, who is at present not formally affiliated with any factions, said the current MPs have proven that they can work together when the need arises.
He said this in reference to the constitutional amendment to lower the voting age to 18, which secured the support of 211 MPs with no nays or abstentions in July 2019.
"I was belittled for trying to amend the constitution even though the government did not have two-thirds support.
"... But thank God, because of bipartisanship, we succeeded... Malaysia needs more bipartisanship.
"Set aside egos, break the party barriers for our beloved Malaysia," he said in a Facebook post.
The cabinet yesterday agreed to implement an "emergency" and had sought royal consent for it.
The details behind the move have yet to be made public, but speculation is rife that it is to avoid having to call a snap election should the Perikatan Nasional government fail to pass Budget 2021.
A snap election could prove disastrous to public health, as the country is currently facing a third wave of Covid-19 infections with more than 8,400 active cases as of yesterday. - Mkini
