PETALING JAYA: An Umno Supreme Council member says the party’s “new conditions” for supporting the Perikatan Nasional-led administration will be irrelevant if Parliament is suspended.
In a statement, Puad Zarkashi said there was speculation over a proposal to prorogue Parliament.
“But what is the reason? Is it a political manouevre or to fight Covid-19? Hopefully, Covid-19 is not being made a scapegoat.”
Proroguing Parliament, Puad said would also give rise to several other perceptions, including that the government can avoid a vote of no confidence.
“Secondly, the government wants to ensure that Budget 2021 is not rejected in a vote in Parliament.
“Thirdly, Muhyiddin assumes Anwar Ibrahim’s claim of having sufficient support is true. So prorouging Parliament will foil Anwar’s ambitions.”
Puad said it would also cripple Umno’s push for “new conditions”, more so if it involved a Cabinet reshuffle.
“The registration of Muafakat Nasional may also be postponed for a long time”
Speculation over a declaration of Emergency and the proroguing of Parliament has been rife following a special Cabinet meeting yesterday.
This was followed by a royal audience for Muhyiddin and a number of senior government leaders at the Istana Abdul Aziz in Kuantan, Pahang, where several proposals were presented for Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah’s consideration.
The palace did not detail these proposals but said the King would meet other Malay rulers soon to discuss and refine these proposals. - FMT
