KOTA BARU: Eighteen people in Tanah Merah have been evacuated today following heavy downpour that started yesterday.
The evacuees, from six families, have been placed at two relief centres in the district.
According to the state Welfare Department's portal, 10 of the evacuees were housed at the SK Lawang relief centre while the other eight at SK Kelewek relief centre.
The department also mentioned that heavy rain had resulted in Sungai Golok to rise above the warning level in Rantau Panjang.
As at 8pm, the water level recorded 8.17 metres or 0.17m above its warning level of 8m.
Four other rivers — Sungai Lebir in Manik Urai, Sungai Kelantan in Kuala Krai and in Limau Kasturi as well as Sungai Golok in Jenob — also rose beyond their alert levels.
A warning of heavy rain over the next two days had been issued for several states.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) was reported as saying that heavy downpour was expected for Kelantan, Terengganu and the districts of Jerantut, Maran, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang from today to Dec 19.
Mersing and Kota Tinggi in Johor were also expected to experience similar weather up till tomorrow, it said.
MetMalaysia said heavy rain was also expected tomorrow and on Saturday in Lahad Datu, Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan in Sabah. - NST
