KOTA KINABALU: A 16-year-old boy has his friends to thank for being alive after they rescued him from a crocodile that lunged and snapped its jaws at him in Tuaran district near here yesterday.

The boy had been looking for clams at the riverbanks of Kampung Mengkabong and was trying to cross the river in waist-high water when the reptile pounced on him.

Tuaran police chief Mohd Hamizi Halim said the crocodile, estimated to be 1.7m long, tried to drag the boy under water.

“But fortunately the friends heard the boy’s screams and rushed to him,” Hamizi said.

It was believed the friends had struck at the reptile which subsequently released the boy before disappearing into the water.

Hamizi said the boy suffered serious injuries to his body and leg and was taken to hospital.

He advised local residents to contact the police if they caught sight of the reptile. - FMT
